Guidance on maintaining good mental health

Looking after our mental wellbeing has never been more important than it is now. We are facing the most challenging period of our lives and this is affecting everyone on the planet.

This is tough and will be painful.

The pace and scale of change affecting every area of our lives is dizzying. There will be many moments ahead of understandable fear, sadness and anxiety. However, we are all in it together and although we may not be able to see the end of this, we will get through this and at some stage even this period of our history will be exactly that, history.

Until then, there are many things we can do to support our wellbeing and these will be different for everyone.

Not so easy in this new disconnected world, but new technology has been a great help and old technology like the telephone is still around. And how about rediscovering the art of letter- writing. How much pleasure might you give someone who receives the letter not to mention the achievement of writing it yourself.

Most of us have more time on our hands so now may be a great time to learn a new skill, or rediscover an old one. Become a Great British Baker, learn to play a new instrument or teach yourself a new language online. It’s never too late to learn a new skill and you’ll feel better for it

Doing something for someone else is proven to be good for you. And there’s so many ways to help others: in your household, in your family or in your local community. It’s a win-win!

Paying attention to that which is all around us, appreciating what we have and not what we don’t have, can be a great tonic. Our brains are wired to be on the lookout for what’s wrong - it’s our survival instinct, but it doesn’t always help. Go for a walk in nature, cuddle up with your pet, sing or do whatever else makes you happy. Don’t miss out on the good stuff… there’s so much of it around if we only take the time to notice it.
